The Operating Room Perioperative RN for VA San Diego Healthcare System uses the nursing process to develop individualized plans of care and to coordinate and deliver care to patients undergoing surgical procedures in an operating room setting. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. Preferred Experience: 2 years of Operating Room experience Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. RN has experience as a perioperative nurse in both circulating and scrub role. Procedures are complex and not clinic based types of procedures.The Perioperative RN identifies patient needs, sets goals with patients, and implements nursing interventions and activities to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Addresses the physiological, psychological, socio-cultural, and spiritual responses of patients. Uses standards, knowledge, judgment, and skills based on scientific principles. Uses evidence as the foundation for practice. Assumes responsibility for lifelong learning and accountable for adhering to established policies and procedures. This RN reports directly to the Operating Room (OR) Nurse Manager. Roles and responsibilities: Functions in the role of circulator, scrub, pre-op holding, OR/SPS liaison, and/or charge nurse.- Participates in ongoing quality improvement workplace activities as appropriate to the individual's position, education, and practice environment. Performs on-call duties. Applies the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation) to all aspects of patient care. Participates in the Pre-Op Briefing \"Huddle\". Confirms availability of implants and special equipment prior to patient entering OR. Participates in the pre-op \"Time Out\". Communicates and anticipates the needs of the surgical team members (surgeons, anesthesia, residents, surgical technologists, etc.). Restrings instrumentation and pre-cleans Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) according to standard operating procedures. Checks the autonomic dysreflexia kit, crash cart, defibrillators, and temperature and humidity of rooms where sterile equipment is stored. Communicates with Escort and the Blood Bank for delivery, storage and return of blood and blood products. Performs duties of Service Leader/Alternate such as ordering supplies, instrumentation, etc. Strives to achieve certification in perioperative nursing. Maintains current knowledge of and adheres to AORN standards, recommended practices, guidelines, and position statements. Supervises allied health care providers and support personnel with appropriate authority. Performs other duties as assigned by the OR Nurse Manager. Preferred Experience: BSN preferred, if AND prefer if candidate is enrolled in BSN program or bridge program. Minimum 2 years current Operating Room experience in circulating complex cases, scrubbing experience strongly preferred. RN can circulate complex surgical procedures: Orthopedic total joint cases; robotic procedures; spinal fusions, neurosurgery, gynecology, urology, head and neck, vascular, general surgery, plastic surgery, ophthalmology and cardiac surgery. Scrub experience in complex procedures preferred AORN Specialty certification (CNOR) preferred.
