Nursing Care Assistant I – Duke University Hospital – Day/Night Rotation

Department Profile:
The Birthing Center at Duke University Hospital provides care to antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum and newborn patients and is active in delivering exemplary care for each patient to ensure an excellent patient experience, every time.
Work Hours & Shifts:
Full Time: Day/night rotation;12 hour shifts; minimum 3 nights per month; weekends and holidays as required by unit.
Occ Summary
Performs selected patient care tasks within the Duke Birthing Center under the supervision of Nursing Services to include, but not limited to preparing patients, equipment, and supplies for delivery, special obstetrical surgical procedures, and assisting the obstetrical surgical team. (Procedures and surgeries limited to obstetrics)
Work Performed
Perform a variety of selected patient care tasks within the Birthing Center, including personal care procedures, as required to meet the needs and comfort of assigned patients. Perform a variety of duties in the Birthing Center, to include: preparing of case carts, sterile supplies instruments, and equipment for obstetrical cases; handles instruments peri-operatively; creates and maintains a sterile field. Assist nursing staff in deliveries as directed by nurse: preparation, positioning, transports, transfer and discharge of patient. Sort, clean, and inspect surgical instruments in accordance with standard procedures and techniques. Prepares instruments for transport to Sterile Processing for sterilization and wrapping. Stock rooms with supplies, equipment, and instruments according to written standard and as requested. Obtain and record patient data for medical record: conduct, collect, and deliver routine tests on patient specimens; assist staff with special unit procedures i.e.: amniocentesis. Communicates with patients and other members of the health care team to provide continuity and coordination of services.

Education
Completion of a Level I - Nurse Aide education program approved by the North Carolina Board of Nursing or successful completion of the NC - approved Nurse Aide I competency test. High school diploma or equivalent required.

Currently listed as a Nursing Assistant (NAI) with the Division of Facility Services with no substantiated findings or pending of abuse, fraud, neglect or misappropriation of property. AHA Basic Healthcare provider certification must be maintained/ completed by the end of new hire orientation, which typically takes place during the first week of employment.
