Mahaska Health is an independent, County-owned, busy Critical Access Hospital in Southeastern Iowa which consists of 25 beds and an attached Medical Group that is owned by the hospital. This is not your typical CAH. Mahaska Health employs over 450 employees, and offers appointments in the Medical Group to see most types of specialists so patients don’t have to travel for specialized care.
Job Summary includes:
The Chief Financial Officer administers, directs and monitors all hospital financial activities and keeps the CEO, Executive Leadership Team and the Board of Directors informed of the financial condition of the organization. The organization is comprised of the hospital, Medical Group, and one offsite primary care clinic. The CFO will be responsible for the adherence and compliance of all Federal and State budgetary and financial reporting regulations. Additionally, the CFO will develop financial goals and objectives for the organization, provide oversight for expense management, guidance regarding management of assets and investments, and financial trends within the organization and industry. Also will be actively involved in hospital leadership, strategic direction, value-based care contracting, organizational performance and the growth of a team-oriented culture. This position will be on-site.
Responsible for the overall financial leadership of the hospital
Accountable for all aspects of financial reporting including timely and accurate preparation of financial statements, internal and external reporting on a monthly and quarterly basis, preparing Board reports and participating in monthly meeting with Board, and responsible for financial communication to leaders, community, and Board
Oversee Mahaska Health’s financial and internal controls
Ensure Mahaska Health’s policies, procedures and controls are sufficient, well-designed and properly followed
Identify, develop, implement and report key metrics that drive performance and decision-making, and using those metrics provide strategic decision-support to the hospital by identifying opportunities to improve financial and business performance
Maintain strong relationships with employees, leaders, Board of Trustees and Auditor
Responsible for capital structure, cash management and forecasting, funding and debt management
Develop and implement financial models that supports cost saving initiatives
Responsible for all tax compliance, audit, and financial risk management activities
Collaborate on negotiating, managing and closing major financial agreements by reviewing and assisting with negotiating contracts as needed
Provide leadership to the finance team focusing on continual performance improvement, change management, team development, coaching and succession planning
Monitor the competitive healthcare environment to identify trends and strategic business opportunities
Provide overall hospital leadership that is consistent with a culture of serving others
CFO should have extensive knowledge in hospital financials, revenue cycle, expense management, public bidding requirements and publishing guidelines

10+ years of progressive financial leadership in healthcare, preferably in hospitals
Experience with participating and leading change management of a financial team to create more effective financial organization including accounting, reporting, A/R, A/P, system development, workflow, accountability, policy, budgeting, and forecasting. Experience with both accounting and finance functions in healthcare.
Experience with strategic alignment, identifying business opportunities, analyzing the competitive landscape, and developing financial models that are consistent with the hospital’s overall strategy.
Ability to develop KPIs and other tools and reports to help promote leadership in continuous improvement across functional areas.
Strong financial planning and analysis skills with the ability to generate insights supporting accurate forecasting
Strong written and oral skills
Ability to effectively communicate with employees, leaders, Board, patients, businesses and community members, and partner with external clients such as auditors and bankers
Ability to quickly assess what is working and what isn’t and change course quickly
Must be team-oriented focused on doing the right thing because it’s the right thing to do
Should be results-driven who focuses on using data to make financial decisions
Should possess ability to take calculated risks to create significant value
