The Orthopedic Surgeon position will be located within the Specialty Care Service Line at the Beckley, WV VA Medical Center. Duties include, but are not limited to: Examines, diagnoses, and treats diseases and injuries to the musculoskeletal system. Prescribes course of treatment for patients with injuries, disorders, or malformations and performs required surgery. Conducts and supervises direct patient care, including some non-surgical treatment options. Plans and executes disease prevention and health promotion programs. Exercises command of medical units as provided by law and regulations. Conduct medical research on new injuries or diseases, and conducts, supervises, and participates in medical education and training of other medical personnel. Participates in on-call schedule in a responsive and timely manner. Provides outpatient consultation and hospital consultation services. Maintains CME units based on the requirements of the specifying Board. Maintains historical records by documenting symptoms, medications, and treatment events and writing summaries. Enhances department and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests and exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments. Delivering the best possible orthopedic care to our Veteran patients. Participating in and/or managing all aspects of a general orthopedic program to include clinical, administrative, and academic components. Participating in and/or managing a broad range of orthopedic surgery practice. This encompasses all areas of general orthopedic and musculoskeletal surgery including major joint reconstructive services. Performing surgery and provide pre-op and post-op care as indicated for major and minor procedures, as well as orthopedic consultation for inpatients and outpatients. Maintaining good diagnostic, judgmental, and therapeutic acumen. Timely documentation (notes and encounter forms) in accordance with facility policy. Serving as leader and/or active member on Medical Center committees as requested. Financial Disclosure Report: Not required This facility is a standard complexity surgical hospital that performs mostly outpatient type orthopedic surgical procedures. Currently, this facility does not do any joint procedures. Some of the OR procedures include: shoulder arthroscopy which can include distal clavicle resection, subacromial decompression, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, and/ or lysis of adhesions. Knee arthroscopy which can include medial/lateral meniscectomy, loose body removal, chondroplasty, etc. ACL repair of knee (rare but can) ankle arthroscopy ankle fusion ankle ORIF for medial or lateral malleolus fx. Wrist fusion forearm ORIF radial or ulnar fracture Ulnar nerve transposition carpal tunnel release trigger finger release Medial or lateral debridement of epicondyles Olecranon bursectomy Mass excision at multiple locations tibial plateau fracture repair Tendon repair from hands to legs basal joint arthroplasty with resection MTP joint fusion, cheilectomy Removal of Hardware (wrist, ankles, forearm, etc) ganglion cyst excision Dupuytrens contracture achilles tendon repair. Also repair traumatic amputations with wash out and exploration as well as manipulations under anesthesia which could occur on shoulders, knees, or hips. We have 2 full time anesthesiologist and 2 CRNA's.
