JOB TITLE: Respiratory Therapist Registered LOCATION: Geisinger Medical Center Hospital DEPARTMENT: Respiratory Care Services WORK SCHEDULE: Days/Nights WORK TYPE: Full Time JOB SUMMARY: Assesses patients' respiratory care needs based on a variety of data. Plans, organizes, performs, and evaluates treatment modalities to meet those needs.
Performs all duties to the highest level of patient care and maximum patient satisfaction, in accordance with the goals and objectives of the Geisinger Health System.
Responsible for ensuring the very best patient/family experience by optimizing all customer interaction. Foster a positive work environment through mutual support and cooperation and adheres to GHS and unit specific Service Standards.
Works under the general direction of the RCS Leadership Team. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: *1. Consistently performs and documents thorough patient assessments. Establishes appropriate care plans. Communicates with other members of the patient care team.
*2. Correctly performs and documents routine therapeutic modalities including aerosolized medications, secretion management techniques, pulmonary volume expansion, oxygen therapy, and assists with routine care and maintenance of artificial airways.
*3. Initiates and manages conventional and high frequency mechanical ventilators according to established protocol.
*4. Provides appropriate, age-specific, patient and family education as it relates to disease management.
*5. Assists in intra-hospital transport of mechanically ventilated patients.
*6. Responsible for acute airway management in emergent situations.
*7. Sets up and manages non-invasive monitoring (i.e. ETCO2 monitors, pulse oximeters).
*8. When care management not available, assists with discharge planning for patients needing respiratory related DME supplies, follows appropriate insurance guidelines.
*9. Adheres to regulatory requirements and safety standards. Adheres to institutional and nationally established standards of care.
*10. Collects arterial blood gas samples and processes through point of care blood analyzers.
*11. Maintains the confidentially of patient information according to established internal and external specifications and regulations including release of information and HIPAA.
*12. Demonstrates respect and courtesy for all persons with whom he/she is associated (i.e. patients, co-workers, visitors, physicians, volunteers and staff) in accordance with the Service Standards of the Geisinger Health System.
*13. Functions as the Shift Coordinator (charge person) when designated as such after one year of employment.
*14. Assists the medical team in the performance of fiberoptic bronchoscopy procedures.
*15. Assists the medical team with the placement invasive monitoring lines and obtains hemodynamic measurements/calculations.
*16. Assists in the intra-hospital transport of age specific patient groups.
*17. Functions as a preceptor for orientees and students in their clinical rotation.
*18. Performs other duties as required or assigned by emergency or other operational reasons for which the employee is qualified to perform.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Requires RRT graduate of a COARC accredited program in respiratory therapy with registry eligibility upon graduation. To be eligible for employment, individual must have successfully completed the RRT exam and possess or have verification of temporary permit or permanent license.
Must maintain AHA BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, and participate in departmental inservice programs.
Must maintain current PA State license and NBRC credential.
Must satisfy department orientation standards.
